Important Information about Changes at eHost
|
 |
 |
 |
 |
On April 29, 2003, we upgraded our hosting platform and many of the services we provide. The changes we've implemented offer tremendous opportunities, and we want to be certain you understand how your Web site, e-mail and other services will be affected.
Please review the following information carefully. If you need additional information, you can visit our new Knowledgebase or contact eHost Support.
We will do everything possible to ensure a smooth transition to the new platform, and we are confident you'll be pleased with our improved services.
Domain Names and the Domain Dashboard |
We have made changes to our domain management tools. If you have a question about your domain, please review the information below or visit our Domain Help page.
Did you purchase your domain name through eHost, but choose a different company to host or provide DNS services for your Web site?
For folks who chose to purchase a domain name through eHost, but receive DNS or hosting services elsewhere, we have created two new tools to help you manage your domains:
If you fall into this category and need additional assistance, please take a moment to review the information on our Domain Help page.
You can also contact us through our online Support Form if you are not able to access the information you need.
Please note: we only provide free phone support for our hosting and Domain Dashboard members. If you would like to speak with one of our representatives about your domain name, there will a $12.50 charge associated with the call.
Do you host your site at eHost?
We have made the Domain Dashboard interface available to all of our hosting customers. You can now use the Domain Dashboard, which is accessible through the Members Area, to renew, repoint, add and manage multiple domain names.
Did you purchase the Domain Dashboard?
As a result of the platform upgrade, we now require a username, rather than an e-mail address, to login to the Domain Dashboard. You should have received an e-mail that included the username for your account. If you do not have access to that e-mail, you can request your username through the new Domain Dashboard login page.
Domain Dashboard customers have been upgraded to the "Advanced Domain Dashboard," which provides access to the management interface for multiple domains, plus custom DNS and five domain redirects.
We have made an important change to our subdirectories offering in the Advanced Domain Dashboard. We will redirect subdirectories of your domain name to other domain names, but we no longer be able to point to subdirectories of the same domain.
For example, subdirectory.yourmaindomain.com can point to yourotherdomain.com, but it cannot point to yourmaindomain.com/subdirectory.
Username, Password and the New Online Control Panel |
You can now use one username and password to login to all areas of your account, including FTP, e-mail,the Domain Dashboard and the new Members Area.
You're going to love the new Members Area! It's a comprehensive online control panel that offers access to all aspects of your account including billing information, file management, CGI, MySQL and more!
Most customers will find that their usernames have not changed. However, we may have altered your username to comply with the requirements of the new platform. Please refer to the e-mails you received regarding the upgrade or contact eHost Support if you need to confirm your username or password.
Changes to Services and Applications |
We have developed new, more intuitive interfaces for all of our tools and services. We encourage you to take a few minutes to explore the new Members Area and experiment with the interfaces.
In addition, the following tools have undergone significant changes.
CyberMessageBoard
We have simplified the path to the CyberMessageBoards. It is now:
http://cybermessageboard.eHost.com/yourusername/
If your Web site and Message Boards are hosted by eHost, users who visit the former path should be redirected to the new path.
SiteCounter
We have likewise changed the path for SiteCounters. If you find your counter is not working, please visit the Members Area to access the SiteCounter tool and regenerate your counter with the correct path.
GuestBook
The GuestBook is still being migrated to the new platform. It should be available in a few days.
eSellerCart, SiteBuilder and the Survey Tool
As we previously notified members who are actively using these tools, our new platform will not support the eSellerCart, SiteBuilder and the Survey tools.
- Sites created in SiteBuilder will continue to work, but you will not have access to SiteBuilder to edit them.
- eSeller Carts and Surveys will not work and the tools to manage them are no longer available.
We have made substantial improvements in our ability to provide you with account-related support by expanding our Support team and launching a new Knowledgebase that offers answers to most common questions.
However, to ensure the quality and timeliness of our responses, we will no longer be able to provide guidance or assistance in the creation or de-bugging of customized scripts that our members write.
New Contact Information for Support
Online: For the most efficient service, we suggest you contact us via our new online form.
Telephone: You can also call us at 781-852-3393 or toll free at 866-56-eHost (866-563-4678). Phone support hours are Monday - Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. (eastern U.S. Time)
E-Mail: Technical and product inquiries should be made to support@eHost-inc.com. Billing questions should be addressed to billing@eHost-inc.com.
We changed the directory structure on the eHost servers. To make sure your CGI scripts still work, we updated the absolute path to your files and made every effort to convert your scripts to the correct paths.
If you discover a pathname issue, you can check the path by clicking the "CGI Management" link in the Members Area. The correct path will be displayed on that page. Please update any scripts that are not working correctly with the path the tool provides— and be sure to use this path for any new scripts you create.
The path for FormMail has changed. If you are experiencing difficulty with your FormMail, please use the following path:
www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/FormMail.pl
(This path is case sensitive. Be sure to copy it as is!)
Do not use an IP address to FTP files. Please use ftp.eHost.com instead.
We recently updated the eHost Terms of Service. Please review them. By maintaining your account, you agree to abide by these Terms.
If you pay by check, please remit payments to our new billing address.

Updating Your Site with the File Manager |
In addition to FTP, we now offer a comprehensive File Manager that makes it easy to update your site.
There is now only one secure SSL server for customers: protected.ehost.com. Use of the secure server is included in all paid eHost plans. As part of our platform upgrade, we attempted to update old secure server file references to the new path, but may not have found them all. Please make these changes to ensure the continued operation of any secure services:
To display any of your published pages through a secure connection, link to the file with this format:
https://protected.ehost.com/[your username]/[path to the file in your web directory]
EXAMPLES:
-
https://protected.ehost.com/myusername/index.html will display http://myusername.ehost.com/index.html through an SSL connection.
-
https://protected.ehost.com/myusername/cgi-bin/FormMail.pl will route http://myusername.ehost.com/cgi-bin/FormMail.pl through an SSL connection.
CGI, PHP, and other scripts will route properly through the SSL server. The submission of FrontPage forms to the secure server is not supported.
Password Protected Directories (.htaccess control) |
If you are password-protecting directories using .htaccess, there are three options now available:
- Use our Password Protector tool (part of the PowerPack tool set). This browser-based tool allows you to manage password-access to your directories and is included with your paid eHost plan.
- FrontPage users may use the password-protection features in FrontPage.
- Create an .htaccess file offline and FTP it directly to your Web directory.
We do not advise, and cannot support, the use of more than one of these tools at a time.
Open Browsing/Index Pages |
Because it presents a security risk, we can no longer support "open browsing." You must have a file titled "index.html" for your site to work correctly.
Open browsing occurs when visitors can view a list of directories in a Web site because there is no "index.html" file acting as a homepage.
We recommend browsing files via an FTP browser, such as WS_FTP or Cute FTP, which is much more secure. For information about these FTP browsers, visit our Web Authoring/FTP Tools page.
